Issues / Challenges.

Under the able leadership of Sheriff Steve Boyer, the Kitsap County Sheriff’s department has improved and excelled in many areas critical to law enforcement. However, there remain many vital issues and challenges ahead.

Senator Maria Cantwell and Sheriff Steve Boyer

Long term funding of public safety—balancing the growing needs for law enforcement services versus respecting the limits of tax dollars

Acquiring and utilizing technology to fight crime—for example, incorporating global positioning system (GPS) technology, implementing radiofrequency identification (RFIE), wireless access to criminal records, and enhanced communications

School safety—education is a key component to a healthy community and we must assure that our schools are safe and secure for our children

Substance abuse—methamphetamine use, for example, is particularly destructive and pervasive necessitating a continued coordinated effort to combat it

Domestic violence—swift and meaningful intervention can prevent needless loss of life and destruction

Traffic congestion and safety—as our county grows this will intensify—more effort is needed to keep our motorists and pedestrians safe

Increase staffing—we will need more deputies on patrol and more corrections officers to utilize the new jail space

Enhance collaboration and resource sharing with all levels of government in our region to maximize efficiency

Continue to identify and provide state of the art police equipment to further enhance officer safety and efficiency

Continue to meet and exceed industry standards
